For Episode 16 of the UNSUNG podcast, ‪ ‪@mixedbyjocelin‬ and ‪@Matt_Audiomovers‬ were joined by mixing engineer & co-founder of MIXLAND Audio Jesse Ray Ernster at his studio in Los Angeles.

 

As an engineer, Jesse has been nominated for 3x GRAMMYs, winning for Best Global Music Album in 2021 for his mixing on Burna Boy’s album “Twice As Tall”. Outside of his work with Burna he’s worked on multiple Gold and Platinum selling records along the way mixing Doja Cat, Megan The Stallion, Shenseea, Sam Tompkins and many more.

 

Between mixing projects in 2020, Jesse and his friend Eddie Lucciola came together with an idea for a new plugin company ‘MIXLAND Audio’. Jesse was testing Kiive Audio’s products for Eddie at the time and the feedback Jesse was providing proved to be so valuable the conversation evolved into them going into business together.

 

In this episode Jesse talks about NAMM, being himself in public and on the internet, how MIXLAND was born, the new era of artist owned plugin brands, how he designed his studio, how he uses Audiomovers, working with Burna Boy, Burna Boy’s vocal chain, Jesse’s approach to mixing, mixing with your eyes vs your ears, the GRAMMYs, having plaques/awards on display, working on different genres, the music scene in LA, pivoting into just mixing, and gratitude for working in music.
